Transitioning saved searches

If you have searches saved in the discovery service SuperSearch and you would like to preserve those searches, you'll need to manually replicate and save those searches in another database or by using OneSearch. Unfortunately there is no quick and easy method to transfer saved searches from SuperSearch to OneSearch. Users are responsible for making sure they have searches saved in another format, if desired.

Let's take a look at a saved search in SuperSearch and the process I'd follow to transfer it to the new discovery service, OneSearch.

Step 1: Navigate to your saved searches and click on Retrieve searches

Step 2: Rerun Search

Step 4: Transition to OneSearch and paste the search in. Replicate the the specific search features like the date span, whether viewing peer-reviewed articles, or other limits. We recommend using the Advanced Search.

Step 5: Save search by Save query (with tack/pin icon)

Transferring saved articles

In this section we will review several different ways to transfer saved articles from SuperSearch. It is important to note that saved articles in SuperSearch will not automatically transfer to OneSearch. This means that the user is responsible for manually transferring any of the articles that have been saved in SuperSearch via the "My Folders" feature into another space to save them.

Option 1: Download and save PDFs of the articles

Consider this option if you:

  • Save your PDF files to a specific folder
  • Have a limited number of articles saved
  • Have more time to spend downloading and saving

This option allows the user to simply download and the save the PDF of the article to either:

  1.  A folder on their computer
  2.  A personal Google drive account.

It is important to note that this option will only work with saved articles that have the full-text, PDF option.

Option 2: Export the saved articles

Consider this option if you:

  • Use a citation management system like Zotero
  • Have many items saved in your folders
  • Want a quick method

Select the export option in your SuperSearch folder. This option allows you to export all of the saved articles. We recommend the .RIS option which allows you to export the saved articles into citation management software such as Zotero. For those who don't use a citation manager, we recommend selecting the CSV option, which provides bibliographic citations of the saved articles in a spreadsheet.

Option 3: Email saved articles to your email address

Consider this option if you:

  • Have a limited number of articles saved
  • Rely frequently on your email as a place to search
  • Want a quick method

This option allows the user to email all of the articles within a folder directly to their email address. To do this, access your SuperSearch folder, then select the email icon. Enter your preferred email address, click the send button. Note that each article gets emailed individually and will include the bibliographic citation and the PDF (if available).

Option 4: Locate the articles in OneSearch or Google Scholar

Consider this option if you:

  • Prefer saving articles in an online environment (easier linking)
  • Have a limited number of articles saved
  • Have more time to spend searching and saving

For this option, we recommend copying the title of each article and then pasting it in either OneSearch or Google Scholar. When you find the article, you can download and save it to your computer or your Google Drive account. You also have the option to "pin" each article in OneSearch or "star" them in Google Scholar.

If you are having difficulty finding an article, you can place the article's title in quotation marks (" "), or contact the library for assistance.

Transitioning Permalinks (saved in Canvas)

This content will be especially helpful for instructors and program directors. If you have permalinks from SuperSearch saved in your course content in Canvas, you'll need to update those links. If you don't, you risk having students reporting broken links at the beginning of the spring semester.

The following video will illustrate how to find an article in OneSearch, obtain a Permalink and embed it (or update it) in Canvas.
