Finding Medical Images

The following resources contain medical images. Many of them feature search functions to locate the images and find out details about the medical case. Reuse of these images is permitted in many cases, but should be individually sought at the image level. See the information below each resource to discover details about the reuse parameters.

MedPix
Provided by the National Library of Medicine. MedPix® is a free open-access online database of medical images, teaching cases, and clinical topics, integrating images and textual metadata including over 12,000 patient case scenarios, 9,000 topics, and nearly 59,000 images.
NYSORA
The New York Society of Regional Anesthesia (NYSORA) grants blanket permission to reuse the images obtained from the educational material. This attribution must accompany any uses on slides or publications: SOURCE:NYSORA.COM.

Public Health Image Library
Provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Public Health Image Library provides images related to medicine and public health. The search engine features options to search only in public domain photos.The photos may not present medical best practice and are historic in nature.
NCI (National Cancer Institute) Visuals Online
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Visuals Online provides a range of photographs and illustrations that may help communicators of medical and public health convey meaning, describe concepts, and tell stories. The collection spans everything from biomedical, science, and patient-care related illustrations and images to portraits of present and past directors and the staff of the National Cancer Institute. Visuals Online currently provides public access to 3,559 images.

Many images are in the public domain. Each image or illustration included in the NCI Visuals Online Web site is labeled either "Public Domain" (free to use) or "Copyright Protected" (restricted, obtain permission before use).

ANY reproduced images should acknowledge NCI as the originator, the NCI Web site, www.cancer.gov, as the source and/or the image creator.

Find thousands of images and icons. Download free versions by agreeing to the attribution statements required by each image license.
Pexels
Pexels is a repository of royalty-free images for reuse. It's best practice in academia to credit the original creator and source even if not required.
