In an article published in March 2014, "Mapping the Literature of GIS" (College & Research Libraries), Edith Scarletto ranked journals cited in four important GIS journals—Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Cartography and Geographic Information Science, International Journal of Geographic Information Science, and Cartographic Journal—between 2008 and 2010. Journals were ranked according to the number of citations. The study identified 23 core journals and a large number of peripheral journals.
Below are listed the top 53 titles to which the SMU library does and does not provide access, along with embargo information where relevant. The numbering reflects each journal's overall ranking.

Peer Review is a process that journal editors use to ensure that the articles they publish represent the best scholarship currently available. When an article is submitted to a peer reviewed journal, the editors send it out to other scholars in the same field (the author's peers) to get their opinion on the quality of the scholarship, its relevance to the field, its appropriateness for the journal, etc. Only articles that pass the review are published in the journal.
